"This Is For My Grandmother"
CHIA-CHING Wu dedicated his 2005 Kaohsiung World Pool Championship glory to his grandmother Chu-chi Lin, who inspired him on the path to stardom.
The 16-year-old from Taipei County stunned the pool world with his 17-16 victory over Po-cheng Kuo in the final and then gave the credit to his 63-year-old relative.
“I proved myself to my grandmother, he said. “I showed that I can do it because of the help she gave me.
“Once I’d won, my emotions changed and I just broke down.
“Even when I was 16-12 down I didn’t think of giving up. I thought if I got to the table again I’d go for my shots and have a chance.
“To run four racks like I did is easy if luck is on your side and fortunately for me it was.
Wu will return to school next week a national hero in Taiwan – as well as being US$75,000 richer.
“I don’t think this will make much difference to my future, he added. “This is a great honour for me and I know I will be watched more closely now – my life won’t be as free as before.
“I will buy my grandmother a flat and I’m planning on buying a house myself. I know there will be invitations to more international tournaments and I’m really looking forward to travelling the world.”
